Apple… It’s Happened

When the first iPhone came along, it was a pretty revolutionary device. Nothing else was quite like it. Since then, every release of the iPhone has been accompanied by a crowd of drooling fans, eager to give Apple their money for the latest shiny toy. Something interesting is beginning to happen though. People are getting wise to the fact that the new iPhone isn’t that much better than the last one. By Apple’s standards, the 5c was a bit of a disappointment, and Android is growing its market share like an unstoppable juggernaut. With the release of the iPhone 6,…

October: What a month!

Well, that was quite a month. Today is a rather wet and cold haloween night and this is the first post I’ve had a chance to put together this month. Admittedly a lot as happened, both for me and in the wider world. For the first two weeks of the month I was in Taiwan celebrating my wedding with my wife’s family which was hectic to say the least. I also had an interesting driving lesson, learning to navigate the mass of scooters zipping around Taipei like a game of Asteroids! On the plus side though, my wife is now…

A Kidney for an iPad and iPhone. Steve would be proud!

Normally when we talk about selling body parts for something desirable, we only mean it as a joke. Not so with Mr. Wang a 17 year old from the Anhui province of China who sold a kidney for £2197, a large part of which he spent on an iPad and an iPhone. Unsuprisingly, the fanboy moron involved is now suffering from renal failure and will either live in considerable pain while undergoing dialysis for what remains of his life. Alternatively he will shortly die and will get to meet Steve Jobs up close. Meanwhile the planet will be spared one…

Want a high-performance workstation? Step away from the Mac Pro

The other day I was engaging in a spot of Apple bashing with some fellow IT professionals and our thoughts turned to the subject of full sized performance workstations, namely the Mac Pro. We agreed that they are generally stupid, they use old technology and overcharge massively for the privilege. I decided to prove this by doing a rather unscientific but simple exercise. As part of this exercise I have built two Mac Pro systems, a mid-range model and a high end model. I am then going to build a PC equivalent of the Mac model on specification in order…

Steve Jobs… Why the world is a better place without him

I suggested earlier that I was glad Steve Jobs has gone, and despite the abuse I received for saying it, I stand by that point of view. It’s not that I dislike him as a person – I’ve never actually met him. As a businessman he was one of the greats – something I will come back to. But in terms of the effect he has had on the world, he was not a genius visionary, instead he was possibly the worst thing that has ever happened to the technology industry and therefore I cannot mourn his passing – just…
