RIP Neil Armstrong

I was sad to read this morning that Neil Armstrong has passed away at the age of 82. It has however been suggested that he would not be amused by all this attention being lavished on him since he considered himself a “nerdy engineer” doing a job for his country. His family said “Neil Armstrong was also a reluctant American hero who always believed he was just doing his job.” He was more than that though, he was an inspiration to millions and for that reason alone he deserves all the praise and admiration he has received.

Why I feel sorry for Julian Assange

I don’t for one second believe that Julian Assange is whiter than white, and if there was an offence of looking ‘shifty’, then send him down because he’s as guilty as hell. So why is he sitting as a political refugee in the Ecuadorian embassy? Some journalists are suggesting its because he’s trying to escape the equivalent of rape charges in Sweeden while George Galloway has tried to “help” by suggesting that what he’s accused of is not really rape. So is Assange a rapist? I don’t know, and nobody seems to have all the facts, or is willing to…

Celebrating the best of British

The technology press talks about how Steve Jobs had a “Reality Distortion Field” that he used to convince idiots to buy his underspecified and overpriced products. Yet even he couldn’t have achieved what has happened in London over the past fortnight. For two short weeks we have gone from being a country worries about debt, spending cuts and a double-dip recession to jumping on our seats cheering Mo Farah onto his two gold medals and Usain Bolt as he took the trebble in style, if not humility. The London olympics set out to showcase the best of British, and save…

This is a very special article

Unlike the 71 articles that have come before this one, this is the first that has required no manual intervention in the database in order to publish it. In short, I have finished the core development work on CallamMcMillan.com version 6 after a development effort of nearly a year. While there is still plenty more to do, I can at least see the light at the end of the tunnel and can now focus more on producing new content for it rather than coding the functionality this website needs.

Incorporating Cisco Equipment into Visio Drawings

Want to put Cisco network icons into your Visio document or Powerpoint? Want to model Cisco equipment in Visio but can’t be bothered to draw it out? Well don’t worry because Cisco has done it for you! They provide a range of icons for use in the Microsoft Office suite and some of them should also work in more rubbish office suites. You can find the symbols here and the Visio components here

Why there’s no such thing as a cheap website

I’ll make it clear from the start, this isn’t a sales pitch, I am not taking on third party work. What I do get asked to do from time to time however is to give advice to somebody wanting a website. This is what I tell them. In short, there’s no such thing as a cheap website. I often hear the phrase “my [Insert relative or friend here] is doing it for £40.” This is where I have to try and remain tactful and not start laughing at them while calling them stupid. More often than not the person doing…

Lords reform is dead – now what do we do?

You should have seen Nick Clegg announcing that the Liberal Democrats were dropping their plans for reform of the house of Lords – it was quite a sight because you know what he really wanted to say was “You Tory bastards!!” In short, a rare dose of sanity has blanketed itself over Westmister and faced with significant enough opposition to Lords reform that passing it into law would be unreasonably delayed, they have backed off and laid these plans to rest. What is unclear at the moment however is how much of a fatal wound this decision is to the…
