Site Admin

CallamMcMillan.com is now built on WordPress, following many years of running on a custom built CMS. In these articles we look at the business of Site Admin – both technical and practical. Running a website is a combination of producing great content that people want to read, but also dealing with spam, updates, and people trying to break into your website. Hopefully, some of this will help to make your life easier.

CallamMcMillan.com at Five

Well, after a frankly pathetic June where I managed to publish just one article through a combination of sheer laziness and being busy with other projects, I’m back! Which is a good thing as today is a special day. Today marks the fifth anniversary of CallamMcMillan.com being launched on July 3rd 2007. Through disk failures, coupled with an ad-hoc system of backups, there isn’t much left of early versions of the site to look at, not that they offered much, either in terms of design or content. One of the reasons for this is my hatred for pre-made web sites…

CallamMcMillan.com has a twitter feed!

One of the perennial problems of keeping this website up to date with content is finding the time to write it. Also, an entire article to a single thought or observation seems wasteful of our time. So, despite my reservations about the value and usefulness of Twitter, CallamMcMillan.com now has its own Twitter feed – @CallamMcMillan. You can follow us, check it out at http://twitter.com/CallamMcMillan, or add that address to your favourite RSS reader to keep up to date. Also, please note that the reader widget on the homepage can be a little flaky in some versions of IE.

Introducing: Mitul Patel

As I promised when I launched this site, I would get guest writers to help me out. Today I would like to introduce the self-proclaimed professional trouble-maker Mitul Patel. Mitul is a few weeks away from completing his masters in Computer Science at Loughborough University where he is completing his thesis project titled “Simulating mobile nodes in ad-hoc systems.” Outside of university Mitul is studying for his CCNA and is looking to become a full time network engineer. Mitul also enjoys lock picking, white-hat security and interesting TV. Mitul’s computer setup includes an overclocked Sandy Bridge i7, five monitors, a…

50th Article – A CallamMcMillan.com Update

In a little over seven months CallamMcMillan.com has published 50 articles on a wide range of topics, ranging from the technical – Cisco discussions and the like, to the bizarre, such as the terminally stupid, via everything in between. Unlike some of the articles which made the previous version of my website, I have tried to make these more considered and more on a single topic! So for the 50th article I thought I’d do a summary of my latest changes and take a look at where the site will go next. At the moment I am working on two…

CallamMcMillan.com Version 6. The challenges of building a custom blogging platform

Today marks a big phase of the development of CallamMcMillan.com in that I have virtually finished all the big outstanding tasks on the public side of the site although there is still quite a lot to do on the private side of the site before I can sit back and say it’s done. When I am ready to publish what you read now, I have to manually insert it into the database that supports this site using my domain administration console. As you can imagine this is hard work and time consuming. If you take a couple of minutes to…

CallamMcMillan.com: Now online

With the completion of a couple of bugfixes and the publication of the RSS feed yesterday, the main development work on CMv6 is now complete and CallamMcMillan.com is now online. What this means is that while I still need to do some development work on the site, most of this is now cosmetic, or on the back-end of the site and the main focus is on content. This post will look at a few of the outstanding tasks and some of the issues the site faces. The first thing is that all the main functions needed to make the site…
